Solo Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper from the 1970’s by New York artist Joe Zucker. The exhibition runs from February 4th – March 11th. 2006. It is his first gallery exhibition in Los Angeles. The Santa Monica Museum of Art organized a painting exhibition titled “Murder” in 1995. “Joe Zucker- Paintings in the Collection on Loan from the Rothschild Bank AG Zurich” was seen at the La Jolla Museum of Art in 1982.
Solo Projects exhibition focuses on the medium of paper and the period of the 1970’s. Joe Zucker’s process and his drawing related to paintings are so beautifully shown. The works on paper are studies in a classical sense, preparatory drawings for paintings. His subjects range in the mythical and allegorical of American history, A number of the works on paper are structured with the formal devise of a grid as such his paintings. Throughout the years, his paintings have employed the process of dipping cotton in acyclic paint and stretching it on top of the canvas. The candy-like textures of blurred lines and forms create dynamically animated images. His still lives and landscapes are haunted with strange and beautiful imagery of confrontations and isolated human activity. Joe Zucker was one of the leading artists in the school of “New Image” painters of the early 1970’s. His artwork explores the mergence of a new vocabulary of formalism with process art into a language of dysfunctional and psychedelic realism. Elements of H.C. Westerman and American 19th Century storytelling with its odd, charming, and striking visuals are revealed throughout the works on paper.
Joe Zucker was born in 1941 and lived in Chicago before moving to New York in 1968. He now resides in East Hampton, New York. Paul Kasmin Gallery and Nolan/ Eckman Gallery of New York presently have a two gallery simultaneous exhibition of new paintings and works on paper.
