Solo Projects presents: Marcel Broodthaers: “A Voyage On The North Sea”
September 17th - October 29th, 2005
Solo Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of the work of the late Belgium conceptualist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) from September 17th- October 29th, 2005. This exhibition is titled “A Voyage On The North Sea”. The work was produced in 1974 and is a 16 MM color-silent 4 minutes and 15 seconds piece. It will be shown in the original format projected in a 16 MM projector onto a beaded home movie screen. It beautifully illustrates the lost and haunting image of a ships journey on the North Sea. The work of Marcel Broodthaers discovers for us the letter, the word, the image, which make us whirl around in associations. Broodthaers’superfictions create connotational knots fed by literary references to poets he esteemed like Charles Baudelaire, E.A. Poe, or Stephane Mallarme, as well as by shifts in meaning of the words and images and by his grappling with artistic concepts that influenced him, as embodied in the oeuvre of Marcel Duchamp and Rene Magritte. The exhibition “A Voyage on the North Sea” draws a world of wonderfully hypnotic obsessions creating an altered state of mind.
